Started Filming

Last weekend I managed to get some filming done. I got some clips in the car of my friend driving and some shots of him getting into the car aswell. This Sunday I will be going to the recording studio with one of my characters to get some more filming done.

Risk Assessment

Filiming

This weekend coming I will be going away to a small area outside Aberdeen called Kemnay. I will use the time in this town to capture many shots. The reason for this is because what I am wanting cannot be done in school so I will have to wait. This is of corse the shots of my friend driving, people mingling and dancing in a bar. I am not allowed to film people driving in school as it is potentialy a hazard to himself and others.

Music Synopsis and Film Arc

In my music video "Hitz" I will not be making a video with a specific storyline. It will include shot which follow on from each other to make some kind of sense but i wont be concentrating on one thing in particular.
1) The first shot of my video will be a 360 degree tracking shot around the actor. He will be standing in a fairly narrow alley way. The lyrics will follow "I make Hitz not the publice, I tell the DJ what to play, understand" the actor will not say this but instead stand there with a straight face.

2) The next shot will be of some friends standing and chatting, I will take a slow-motion shot of one of my actors doing some tricks on a bike. I will have some quick shots of someone driving and getting out of the car and being greeted by someone.

3) When the rap kicks in I will have some shots of one of my actorss rapping in the recording studio in school. I will have slow-motion shots of people jumping/dancing in low key lighting, maybe in a club or just at school. I will have some close up shots of people DJing, also in low key lighting.

Stop Motion

This is just a short Stop Motion video i have made for a possibility on
my Titles.

Wednesday 12 October 2011

Institutions That Might Distribute My Video

JHO is my first option,
JHO is quite a popular companie with my selected genre of music. The have signed the following well know Artists Pendulum, Chase & Status, Noisia and Subfocus.

EMI is my second Option,
EMI is the worlds 4th largest signing company. They have Professor Green under their name which is why I think they are also a possibility.

Virgin Records is my third option,
I know that Virgin records would be quite a safe bet. The have alot of well know Artisits such as The Gorillaz, Daft Punk, Chiddy Bang and many more.

I have come to the conclusion that my first option (JHO) is probably the safest bet. The company is realtively small so they would be likely to focus on my video more than the other companies which have so many other signings etc.

Specific Shots

I make hitz, not the public
I tell the DJ what to play! Understand?

I make hitz, not the public
I tell the DJ what to play! Understand?
We used to do

Baa baa black sheep, rock star, rap G
Make enough dough to own a black card, that's deep
I've been getting really fucking friendly with the banks man
And I don't mean Phil card or Hilary ya asking
Pappz hook me up in the vicinity and flash me
I'm the definition of definitive and catchy
The only thing that's bigger, quicker, slicker
More black up and more up in London is a taxi

Bitch I'm so sick, I need a mother fucking vaccine
Pick your ring style like some other fucking fast weed
Centre of attention like a bank and a love son
Hey Steevie reaching for a flat screen
The only ever time I see you niggers on kisses is like 2am or when you go to pucker up
Look 60 GM4 you need to buckle up
Or my women so zoo or my women so nuts

So what and uncut and no fucking edits
She won't even get a high if she made no fucking effort
And all you silly singers and you ring tone rappers
Like school dinner curries
Don't fucking get it

McCar is a lessa
Got a yard river terrace
She called me chauvinistic
But can't even spell it
I don't wanna hear another nigga say your fly
If you a'int never been on business class under M

It's I'm a racket
I pretend I'm Dennis, I'm a menace
Call me Rob Patterson
Got a lot of niggas jealous
I'm a mental, minted, a can of Dr Pepper
That's a tick, tick, tick, tick, boom to you fellas

It's so important that your mighty Nigella
A'int listening if her name a'int Remi or stella
Got a big bag of chips and Mary Poppin's umbrella
Cause we're 'bout to rain on them like London weather

For the First paragraph I think I would have an establishing shot of the scenery and my main actor as well. I may do something similar to what chase and status do with theirs.

The third paragraph i will ask one of my actors to do some tricks on his bike. I think this will be quite appropriate as i fund out through most of my research that these kind of videos have a lot of bikes involved. I will do quite alot of qucik editing. probably have some shots of friends talking etc. Also have some shots of people driving. Again this fits well into the genre.

I will be likely to have shots inside clubs or bars. I can do this when i go home in half term. I think it would be quite cool to have shots from places like that. Maybe take a shot of going through a town at night, play in in fast motion to catch all of the lights and excitment going on.

I will probably have a couple of shots of one of the actors in the recording studio at school when Tinie Tempah is singing.

"Tick,Tick,Tick, boom to you fellas" - I think that this is quite an important line and im sure i could add something quite imaganative to this.

Here are some example shots of what i will be aiming for.

Understanding Young Audiences:
Bellow i have gathered information from websites about young audiences and why pop videos are aimed at them.

Channel 4 commissioned research agencies Dipsticks and Sherbert to carry out research to better understand 11-19 year olds.

The downloadable slides present the results of 1,800 online interviews conducted among a representative sample of 11-19 year olds with additional insights from qualitative research on 10-13 year olds. The quantitative research focused on finance, money and media repertoire whilst the qualitative study centered on information and inspiration, mind matters and trends and talking points.

Top line info

  • Females are significantly more likely to spend money on clothes and socialising whereas males are more likely to spend on gadgets and computer games.
  • Males are significantly more likely to be engaging with online activity.
  • BBC1 and E4 are the two most popular channels for 14-19 year olds.
  • iPlayer and 4oD are the most popular TV services for watching/downloading programmes on demand.
  • Future financial stability and job prospects were a worry for all, even the younger age groups, triggered by the current economic climate.
  • Cyber bullying and issues of cyber safety were big concerns for girls.
  • Boys were particularly concerned about personal hygiene.

    My Perfect Audience Member

I visited the website of both UKtribes and Findyoutribe. My results from these are as follows :
I took the Find you tribe test and got Rah.
The results that i found on UK Tribes are that the audience members suited for my video are
both Ravers and Trackies. This is because they fit into the Chase and Status video well
and are also about the kind of music involved.

The picture bellow represents the Audience members :

What I found surprising was the contrast between Rahs, Ravers and Trackies but according to my selected music video the all come together in a strange kind of mix and this is what the look like (see above).

    Audience Research

Everybody has a different taste in Music to each other. In this day and ages there are some many different genres ranging from Classical to Dubstep. A lot of people will not just listen to one genre of music but instead a few. Personally I like to listen to House,Hip-Hop, and a bit of easy listening now and then such a James Blunt or Coldplay and even some relaxing Reggae.

People who listen to their own specific genres of music usually relate to how the are in real life. Such as somebody who listens to "Death Metal" will usually be dress like a Goth or even a Emo. Other people who listen to House.Electro,Club,Dance etc will usually be somebody who likes to go out and part, have a good time or you get the people who like to chill with their friends and listen to Reggae.

People tend to watch the music video because it might bring back memories. People usually watch the video because they enjoy seeing a storyline to the song they are listening to or they want to relate what the are hearing to something. I personally like to watch music videos because  I like to picture something while listening to it or i just enjoy the storyline.

    Andrew Goodwin's Theory

I am going to be comparing my chosen video with the theory of Andrew Goodwin. In my Video (Hitz)
there is defiantly a relationship between the Lyrics and the Visuals. It is almost like there is a storyline going on. There is defiantly a relationship between the Music and the Visuals. We can see this very clearly when the beat drops or change the visuals will also change and adapt suitable to when is being sung of the tempo/beat. A perfect example of this is before Tinie Tempah starts rapping we see a shot of a sound deck being turned up and the quickly moves onto Tinie Tempah as he start to rap.

I would strongly agree with Goodwin's point about genres being complex and diverse in terms of music video style and iconography. My reason for this is because I have done a lot of research on videos from this genre and none of them are really that similar. In actually fact i struggled to find a video which was similar to the genre (Hip Hop/Drum & Bass). In this video we see child trying to sell  Cd's to get the song out and recognised.

The next point is about recording companies demanding a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist. Here we see many shots of Tinie Tempah, although the song is actually under Chase & Status' name Tinie Tempah probably has the biggest role in the video as he is the Vocalist here. Chase & Status are still playing a relatively big role in the video as we see them quite often in the Studio and outside. I would again agree that this point is happening alot in this Video.

The only other point that I agree with is the point in which Goodwin states that there are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts, these provide further gratification and pleasure for the viewers/fans. However I can only see this to a certain extent and that is where the Child is putting up posters about Chase and Status and trying to sell the Cd's.

Overall i would say that there is quite a big resembalance to Goodwin's theory here.

    Mood Board

The Images i have displayed on my Mood Board are similar to ones that i will be aiming for in my Video. The kind of look that i will be going for in my video is of friends mingling. i will get some shot of a big city, perhaps London. other ideas i had were using the recording studio at school to take some shots of someone singing. From this you can now get a brief understanding of what i am aiming for in my video.

9 Key Screen Shots - Professor Green Jungle

Top Left) Here we see an Image of a group of youths walking somewhere. From this image it looks like they are up to something as their hoods are up and they are quite spread out. This is one of the first images we see from the video.

Top Middle) Now we see a dark skinned man lying in a coffin. It looks clear to us that he is dead. Now we start to get the impression that the video is showing us how he died.

Top Right) The next shot is of the same group of people as before all outside an apartment door. It is clear to us that they are breaking in and are after someone or something.

Middle Left) This shot is of Professor Green singing. I thought it was key that i had an image of him as it is of course his song and we all need to see some images of him. Realise that he has a group of people behind him who are all pointing and looking aggressive.

Middle) This Image is of somebody who is bloody and beaten. He looks to be in a lot of pain so had probably just been in a fight. I'm not sure why there is a clip of him at this time as we do see him until the end of the song. We start to get the impression that maybe we are going back in time.

Middle Right) Now we see a car joyriding in an empty parking lot.  Again this seems a bit random but i included it as it could be a vital part of the story. Or maybe they just added it in for the effect.

Bottom Left) Here we see a Police van. I think that it is a riot van but am not really sure. We have seen quite a lot of fighting up to this point which is why my suggestions point that way. They are most likely their to stop the fighting or arrest somebody.

Bottom Middle) Here we see somebody all tied up and struggling on the floor. This brings us back to earlier when we saw people breaking into the apartment and we realise that they have found who they were looking for. Maybe this guy called the police when he heard them coming. Now the Story starts to link together.

Bottom Right) The last image is of about 7 or 8 people beating on one guy and then running away. Maybe the police is coming to get them. We aren't really sure. Later on we see that the guy who has been beaten up is the same person from the middle picture so maybe this video is reflecting back on time.

I would say that this video is very well but together and there is actually quite a hard storyline to follow. It has inspired me not from the violence side but more from the shots and editing point of view. This is because we see quite a lot of singing from Professor Green which i will do with an actor in my video. Also the way the storyline links up is quite clever. This is what i would like to do rather than just a really simple stage by stage view of what is happening. The reason i want to do this is because it will make it feel much more like an actual story which is what i am aiming for.

    Textual Analysis 2

Here a have picked written in the stars as a song from a similar genre. The lyrics are actually quite a bit slower than Hitz but the video is quite similar. The Build up to the chours is very well done. The fact that it is Tinie Tempah also makes it similar in a couple of ways aswell. Again from watching this video i have picked up a few more ideas to use in my own video. They have used a very unique style of cinematography once again. Much like from the video of Hitz they seem to have shots of somebody singing quite alot. In this case it is Eric Turner on the piano instead of Tinie Tempah in the recording studio. This is another link of similarity's. In Hitz we can see Tinie Tempah as a child selling CD's, running down streets etc. In Written in the stars they use the stars they use the technique which shows Tinie Tempah singing about when he was a child and nobody cared about him.

    Textual Analysis

Here a have picked another song from Chase & Status - End Credits. There isnt actually hip hop in it however it is a perfect example of drum and base. The singing in it is really nice and easy listening but when the beat drops the drum and base is very lifting. This is what Chase and Status seem to do alot. We can also see from the editing that they like to use slow motion alot. this makes everything more dramatic and effects the audiance more aswell. They have also added in other lyrics which arnt included in that actual song. This makes it seem more realistic as it comes across as more story like. The video has alot of short snappy shots at the beginig and then goes down into a slower pace. We see him sitting in a police interview and behind the police he is there again, This is like a trick on time where he has gone back as a ghost telling him not say what he said before and he will survive. It fits in really well with the lyrics and brings a sense of emotion to the character (Plan B). From looking at the cinematography we can see that this is shot in quite a rough, run down area of London, perhaps where Plan B was brought up. At the beginning when he is falling we can see that it is night time. they use low key lighting which is very effective for this selected shot. We also see everything in slow motion and the impact of when he hits the ground shows ripples on his cheeks. This is very good editing because it makes it look very real.

    Seeking Permission from JHO

Here you can see that i have seeked permission to use the song. I went to the manager of Chase & Status'. As you can see from the image above i sent him an email. It was all very straight forward as all of the needed infomation was on the same page. So basically all i had to do was find him on google which took a matter of a couple of minutes.

Chase & Status - Hitz ft. Tinie Tempah

    Tuesday 13 September 2011

    My Chosen Song

The song i have chosen to work with is Chase and Status - Hitz, Ft Tinie Tempah.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jh-xcKazSk&ob=av2e - here is the link from youtube.
The reason i have chosen a song from this genre (hip hop/drum and bass) is because it is nicely
paced out with some smooth lyrics. Shots that usually appear in music videos from this genre
are of people in recording studios, dancing or even just friends mingling. This is perfect
for the situation i am in at school. I will most likely need to take some footage from outside
of school but this will prove to be beneficial on my behalf. I cant wait to get started on the
filming, and keep viewing my page as there will be regular updates on my progression.

    Welcome

Hello My Name is Toby Finch Noyes and i am about to start working on my A2 Media Studies coursework. I have chosen to work by myself this year. The reason i wanted to do this is so i can make my course work the way i want it and chose the audience i want to satisfy. I will be making a Music video with the song track of a well known song which is yet to be decided. I would appreciate all comments left on my wall and feel free to become a follower .
